A few weeks ago, I had a chance to sit down with Phil Braun, Doe & Ingalls’ Distribution Services Manager. Phil manages our regional service centers across the U.S. and is responsible for the facility operations that support our supply chain services. I wanted to learn more about Phil’s role and what his team sets out to accomplish.
Delivering service so customers can concentrate on production
Phil and his team strive to deliver supply chain services, “so efficiently that the customer doesn’t have to worry about that part of the supply chain. They can concentrate on their production.”
To accomplish this objective, Phil views himself as a facilitator, “…engaging all employees from the site managers to the warehouse leads and warehouse specialists… As we get to know a customer, we begin to understand their pain points, and what their needs are. [Then] we bring the employees together and figure out how we can meet their needs.” Phil went on to tell me that, “Employees get to think creatively on how they can become better and more efficient at what we do to meet the customer’s need.”
Empowering and training the warehouse team
Phil strives to involve his entire team in service excellence. Phil wants, “all employees [to be] empowered and [know] they are part of the success of Doe & Ingalls. [We] want all employees to get involved. Each employee is trained to understand the life science, advanced technology and cGMP world. We push employees to ask themselves: ‘What’s the best and fastest way we can do this?’”
Supporting quality standards
Phil emphasized that our regional service centers must meet the high standards of quality required by life science and advanced technology customers. “Doe & Ingalls’ facility systems, procedures and processes have to meet our customer’s requirements for compliance and quality.” Phil explained that many systems must be in place to be cGMP-compliant. For example, Phil’s team maintains temperature maps and controls. And recently, they hired a pest control company for monthly inspections and invested in software to keep employee training, equipment calibration and maintenance records up-to-date.
Phil and his team use systems, processes and procedures as the foundation of our Streamline supply chain services, which allow customers to focus on production. With a team constantly seeking ways to become more efficient and enhance service, everyone wins.
