Until a few days ago, I knew nothing about Pokémon Go. It was as alien to me as the Tamagotchi, which my mom had to keep alive while I was at school (true story!), would be to an eighth-grader today. After finishing up dinner this past weekend with a group of friends, we decided to take a stroll through downtown. As soon as we stepped out of the restaurant, I glanced over at my friend who immediately whipped out his phone. Within seconds he was straying away from the group trying to “catch” a Pokémon. Other than the constant buzz around it in social media, I knew nothing about the phenomenon. Curious about this craze, I followed my friend and he explained the basics of the game to me. The next day, I looked into it myself and could instantly see similarities to a production supply chain.
“Customizing Your Experience” Production environments are all about tight specs and critical processes. In order to ensure operational efficiencies, there are many crucial parts to the supply chain that require customization. Similar to a Pokémon trainer, your company has specific needs that operate best, or only in highly customized conditions. From lot management to customized inventory and sampling, customization plays as big a part of an efficient supply chain as it does with creating the ideal experience for a Pokémon trainer.
“Adding to Your Pokedex” Ensuring just the right mix of resources, quality systems, and security are crucial to mitigate risk and increase productivity. This can be a costly undertaking, as resource and time investments are essential to meet the demands of an organization. Making sure you have the right pieces is essential, whether it’s the Pokémon in your Pokedex, or the necessary elements to build out and execute a robust supply chain.
“Joining a team and battle” When developing a sound supply chain, it’s important to focus on building strategic relationships. Pokémon Go focuses on team execution, and relationship building is key. It’s also key in supply chain management, as building strong relationships with suppliers, distributors, and manufactures will ensure seamless execution with on-time delivery, customer care management, supplier & quality management, custom inventory & storage, and raw material handling & logistics.
“Evolving in Pokémon Go” Many Pokémon can not only be leveled up but can also evolve into new, more powerful forms. For your business, evolving and adapting to changes in your industry is key for success. It’s important to put key systems, policies, people, and processes in place that will allow your business to scale up for production and beyond as you growth. Whether you are leveling up in Pokémon or evolving your team, building the right supply chain team to combat any challenges will allow for operational efficiencies.
Next time you are out and about catching Pokémon, or at working trying to drive productivity and efficiency, use these tips and tricks to “level up,” too!
