Doe & Ingalls

Redefining your chemical supply chain

History

Co-founders Tom Merrick and John ElmoDoe & Ingalls’ origins begin with the founding of Doe & Ingalls, Inc. in Massachusetts in 1921. Doe & Ingalls, Inc. grew over the years, offering specialty chemical distribution to customers in the New England area. In the 80s, Tom Merrick and John Elmo saw a need for a similar customer-focused specialty chemicals distributor in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) region of North Carolina. In 1986, with the financial help of Burt and Larry Liebman (then owners of Doe & Ingalls, Inc.), Doe & Ingalls of North Carolina was born.

The companies operated independently, but pursued similar business models: both focused on life sciences and microelectronics customers; each specialized in providing specialty chemicals and related services; and both companies pursued a customer-driven service model.

The companies were successful in their respective regions, growing sales as they increased their business with customers and formed strong supplier relationships. Doe & Ingalls of North Carolina added a facility in Tampa, Florida in 1994 to serve emerging business needs in the South.

In 2005, Doe & Ingalls of North Carolina was purchased by private equity firms Pouschine Cook Capital and Anchor Capital. With the additional investment, Doe & Ingalls of North Carolina was able to add facilities in the mid-Atlantic region (Maryland, fall 2007) and the West Coast (California, spring 2009).

In August 2010, Doe & Ingalls Management, LLC, the parent company of Doe & Ingalls of North Carolina, purchased Doe & Ingalls, Inc in Massachusetts. The combined company is known today as Doe & Ingalls. By coming together, the companies expect to bring their customer-driven service model to life science and microelectronic manufacturers nationwide. Doe & Ingalls also intends to expand the supply chain service offerings available to its customers.
